What dust mites are (and where they live)
- Microscopic arachnids that thrive in warm, humid places.
- Favorite homes: mattresses, pillows, duvets, fabric sofas, carpets.
- Food: tiny flakes of human skin.
- Allergen: particles around 5–20 μm, easily stirred up when you move in bed.
Why nights feel worse
When you lie down, your face is centimeters from the allergen reservoir. Movement compresses the mattress/pillow and pushes allergen into the air. Overnight exposure = morning stuffy nose, cough, itchy eyes, wheeze.
How barrier encasements help
A good encasement:
- Fully surrounds the mattress/pillow/duvet (not a fitted sheet).
- Uses a tightly woven or engineered fabric with pores small enough to block allergen.
- Has a fine-tooth zipper with a protective flap so nothing leaks at the closure.
Result: allergens stay inside, you breathe less of them, and symptoms improve. No chemicals—just physics.
What to look for (checklist)
- Pore size / filtration: look for lab data showing allergen barrier (often <10 μm; premium barriers <6–8 μm).
- Comfort: air-permeable fabric so it doesn’t crinkle or overheat.
- Fit: correct depth for your mattress; zipped full encasement.
- Zipper & flap: continuous zipper, end stop, and internal/external flap.
- Care: washable 60–95 °C; performance retained after many washes.
- Standards: skin-safe (OEKO-TEX®), medical-grade production where applicable.
Where to start
- Encase the mattress (largest reservoir).
- Encase pillows (right under your nose).
- Add duvet encasement if symptoms persist.
- Wash outer bedding weekly; encasements every 2–3 months (or per care label).
Extra wins
- Keep bedroom RH 40–50%, vacuum with HEPA filter, reduce soft dust traps, and wash soft toys hot.
